As the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church Pope Francis serves the Church since March 2013. He brings his birthplace Buenos Aires Argentina and American origin to his papacy because he was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17 1936. When elected pope on March 13th 2013 he set multiple historic milestones because he became the first Jesuit to assume leadership while being non-European as well as South American origin. His historical papacy included two unprecedented accomplishments: he became the Latin American pope and the Jesuit and non-European representative of the papacy after 1,200 years. The election of Pope Francis came after Pope Benedict XVI stepped down as a historic event which had not taken place in almost 600 years. This document serves as a major advance in Catholic-Muslim relations by endorsing religious tolerance and peace as well as human dignity.
